OECD senior expert Hubertus Gay discusses the future of global agriculture
The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra podcast welcomes Mr. Hubertus Gay, Senior Expert on Agricultural Policies at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), for a conversation on the newly released Agricultural Outlook 2025–2034 by OECD and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Mr. Gay in interview with Mitchiko Paulette Aljas addresses how rising food demand, sustainability targets and innovations such as new genomic techniques (NGT) will shape global agriculture in the coming decade. He also examines the European Commission’s proposals for the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the impact of a reduced agricultural budget, and the consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine for food security and trade.
Beyond policy and economic forecasts, the discussion touches on the personal dimension of agricultural development. Mr. Gay reflects on what has sustained his commitment to this field, the reasons he remains optimistic about the future, and the importance of connecting global reports to the everyday lives of farmers and communities. The episode closes with a call to young people and students to take an active role in shaping a more sustainable and resilient food system.
