Jewish Quarter
Jewish Quarter also known as Jewish Town or Josefov is the smallest catastral territory in Prague, which is surrounded by the Old Town. The first mention of Josefov appeared at the end of 11th century. At that time, the district was founded due to the destruction of other Jewish settlements during the racial riots against the Jews in 1096. The ghetto began to take the form of a Jewish quarter since 1215, when the Fourth Lateran Council ordered the segregation of Jews from Christian population.
From 1357, when the Jews of Prague received from the German-Roman king and Roman emperor Charles IV the right to use one's own pledge and currency, a red banner with yellow David’s star became an emblem of the Jews (Magen David).
