Saint Nicholas
Our journey takes us through the temple of St. Nicholas. It is the most famous baroque temple of Prague, standing together with a former Jesuit professional house in the middle of Lesser Town Square. In 1743, the Gothic parish church stood in its place, next to the Romanesque rotunda of St. Wenceslas, built as a reminder of a miracle that occurred during the post-death transfer of Wenceslas's body from Old Boleslav to Prague Castle, as mentioned by medieval legends.
Today's Cathedral of St. Nicholas is one of the most valuable buildings of the Baroque. About three generations of great Baroque architects took part in the work that lasted about one hundred years - father, son and son-in-law: Kryštof Dientzenhofer, Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and Anselmo Lurago. The author of the smaller and main temple organs was Thomas Schwarz. The main organs were made in 1745-1747 and have over 4000 whistles reaching up to six meters. The famous W. A. Mozart played these organs during his stay in Prague.
