Think fairy tales are all singing princesses, cute woodland creatures, and happily ever afters? Think again. The original Brothers Grimm stories are full of cannibalistic witches, murderous stepmothers, questionable parenting choices, and punishments that would make Disney executives break into a cold sweat.

In this episode, we dive into the dark and delightfully twisted world of German fairy tales, from the gloriously disturbing Struwwelpeter to the Brothers Grimm’s original stories and their many reinventions. Because apparently, there are only so many ways to traumatise a child with a bedtime story.

Joining us is Patrick from Germany, who also spent time in Marburg, the university town where the Brothers Grimm studied and worked. Who better to guide us through Germany’s enchanted forests, sinister folklore, and suspiciously charming little towns?

And if you’ve ever wanted to plan a fantasy-inspired trip filled with medieval streets, fairy-tale villages, mysterious forests, and the lingering feeling that a gingerbread house might be trying to eat you — this episode is for you.

Pack your hiking boots, bring a healthy distrust of wolves, and remember: if an old woman offers you a free apple, maybe just say no.
